What are the benefits of off-season training? Why swimmers should train
and what they will gain?

The competitive season for Stouffville swimmers is coming to an end at the end of June. It is time to focus on what is coming in the future. I am sure you have heard the expression before; preparation is the key to success. Summer training off-competition is the time to think about what swimmers want to achieve for next season. Stouffville Swim Club is putting a summer training program to help swimmers achieve their long-term goals, also to help swimmers improve on stroke technique, starts, turns and endurances. The club will also offer dry land training to help swimmers improve strength, power, agility and motor skills.

What is off season training?

The off-season is a period of time, it is a perfect window of opportunity, where athletes are not participating in any competitions and can focus on recovery and what needs to be worked on for the next year. If an athlete works hard during this downtime can gain the competitive edge for the next season. Coaches usually refer to the period in between in-season and about 6-8 weeks before the start of the new season.

Why should competitive swimmers training in off-season?

As a competitive swimmer you should take it seriously because being idle for 8 weeks will be detrimental for your swimming career. If the plan is to take off before the start of next season you will find then you have lost swimming skills, fitness and strength. This will bring you back to April swimming level of the previous season. I have seen many swimmers lose their swimming carriers due to long, inactive summers.
